population sanctions

US foreign aid to 'developing' nations should be conditional upon their creating some kind of population policy to bring their population growth under control and maybe even reversing it. We're already starting to see the results of this overpopulation in the attempt by 'economic migrants' to get the hell out of the third-world shitholes they live in and try to make it to the US or Europe. If these people turn out to be basically ineducable, we don't need them. Since the economies of these countries are based largely on subsistence agriculture (if not hunting and gathering), their populations should be reduced to a level that can support people in that kind of economy.

fossil fuels and population

If we're serious about cutting down on fossil fuel emissions-- and I'm not sure we are-- it seems to me there are only two ways to go about it:

1. Technological innovation in clean energy.

2. Lowering the human population so that, even if our individual emissions remain the same (or even go up slightly as nations develop), our total emissions will nonetheless go down.

The IPCC tells us we need to cut greenhouse emissions 50% by 2050, a very tall order indeed. The human population of this planet has tripled in my lifetime. Ergo, if the human population had simply remained stable over this time, our greenhouse emissions would be roughly a third of what they are today. Problem solved.

We shouldn't put all our eggs in the basket of clean energy. Lowering the human population substantially should also be a primary goal.

the trouble with feminists

The trouble with feminists is, they don't reproduce. These are among the brightest, best-educated people in our society, but a lot of them don't have any children at all. It's almost a badge of honor with them. Oh, they might have one, a la Chelsea Clinton, but that's about it, that's enough of that oppressive, patriarchal child-bearing nonsense. Meanwhile, the welfare idiots are churning them out like rabbits. Idiocracy, here we come.

I think educated, intelligent women should feel obligated to have at least two children, three if they and their spouse want one and can afford it. In fact, I would almost say that women like this have a duty to reproduce.

coercion and ridicule

Governments should use their coercive power to control population. Military families, for example, should be restricted to two children. The military is not a democracy. Obey orders or get out.

On the other hand, families that have too many children should be subjected to ridicule. Their absurd assertions that each new child is a 'blessing' is put to the lie when they have to turn to the government, relatives, church members, etc. to pick up the slack when they have too many mouths to feed. It's all part of God's Great Plan.

joycelyn elders

Joycelyn Elders was Bill Clinton's first Surgeon General. She had been the top medical officer in Arkansas when Clinton was governor there, and he brought her to Washington when he won the presidency. Elders quickly got into hot water for her outspoken ways, and Clinton finally had to let her go when she had the temerity to suggest in public that masturbation was an effective means of birth control.

One of her many quotable quotes has always stuck in my mind, though: 'Every child should be a planned and wanted child.' I think she hit the bull's-eye with that one. Succinct, to the point-- and right! Perhaps it was even more memorable because she put it in her ineffable Arkansas drawl: 'Effery chahl should be a pullannned and wohnted chahl.' Right on, Joycelyn!

friends and enemies

Population control has both friends and enemies at different levels of society:

At the individual level:
Friends: Women who don't want to spend their whole lives bearing and raising children.
Enemies: Macho men who think the number of children they have is evidence of their virility-- and that's the most important element of their self-definition.
People who are simply promiscuous and irresponsible.

At the local level:
Friends: Neighborhood groups that have an idea of what they want the neighborhood to be like and how many people should live there.
Enemies: Developers. Enough said.

At the national level:
Friends: Environmentalists, defenders of wildlife.
Enemies: Crazy nationalist natalists like the late Romanian dictator Nicolai Ceausescu, who felt that the power of his country was determined largely by its population. The result was that Romanians had way more children than they could afford, and a lot of them ended up in 'orphanages' that were little more than warehouses for unwanted children. Many of these children, totally predictably, developed physical and mental problems as a result of this institutionalization.

At the international level:
Friends: Environmentalists, defenders of wildlife.
Enemies: Religious natalists: Catholics, Mormons, Ultra-Orthodox Jews. (I don't know if Muslims are natalists.)

coercion, ridicule, duty

The government should use its coercive power to limit reproduction to two children per couple, one child per single woman. (See previous post.)

The media should ridicule people who have too many children: natalists (Catholics, Mormons, Hasidics, etc.) and the irresponsible poor. Of course, family planning services should also be made available to all.

On the other hand, the government should encourage educated, intelligent people to reproduce, to have at least two children, three if they can afford it and want it.
